There I was, giving a presentation at a business meeting, when out of the blue a friend of mine looked at me from across the room and said, “Ben, I say this with all the love in my heart for you man, but you're fat, and you’ve got to get back into shape.”
Ouch. It hurt, but it wasn’t unexpected. Even so, in that moment as I sat there, I just wanted to crawl under the table and hide...
A few days earlier, I had made a quick stop to the Target to grab a few shirts – I wanted some baggier clothes because I was embarrassed that I had put on so much weight since the last time our business group got together.
After hurting myself in my last adventure race, I had slowed my workouts down significantly - to be totally honest with you, I was skipping workouts and had gotten sloppy on my diet. And since I didn’t have the rigor of my workout routine, my nutrition got even worse... I found reasons to eat all of the wrong things and it didn't take long before I was shopping for bigger clothes to hide my fat.
I lowered my head and sighed a long sigh. As my head tilted forward toward my chest, I was only able to say, “You’re right.”
It was like a bad dream. I sat there under the glow of my desk lamp with the latest information on fat loss. After about 10 minutes of reading, I placed my head gently on top of the stack of papers. My eyes were burning and I could feel my jaws starting to clinch. My pulse started to pick up. I felt like I was having a panic attack, like the ones I used to get in college when I was studying for finals.
There are literally thousands of pages out information out there, each one contradicting the next. And rather than simply telling you what to do, they want to waste your time (and brain cells) telling you why they’re right and everyone else is wrong.
You feel like you’re studying for an exam that has no right answers. And all that does is cause you more stress. The more you try to piece everything together in your mind, the more frustrated you feel. And confused.
I know how you feel. There I was, reading about fat loss and hormones and calories and carb cycling... and at the same time, trying to figure out what to do when. My mind kept flashing back and forth to studying for exams in college.
