Hypnosis is not what most people think it is. The most common frame of reference is what we see on stage, TV or even in horror movies where the mind is taken over and controlled by someone else.
The reality is that you are always in control and that all hypnosis is self hypnosis. The therapist or practitioner merely guides you through the process and uses their training to find a shortcut to solve the issue you came in with. The solutions often lie in surprising places but invariably you have the solution within you already.
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, it is not about being unaware or out of control at all. (The zombie like, sleepy part you see on TV is pretty much just drama. Think about it though they still respond to voice and other stimulus so they are not “out of it”) If you have ever watched a stage show you will have seen “unsuitable” participants being weeded out. That’s because they did not have the required level of trust or rapport with the hypnotist to go along with what they were being asked to do.
It is all about permission. Everyone can be hypnotized as it is a naturally occurring state. You pass through it at least twice every day as you fall asleep and wake up again. That not quite asleep, not quite fully awake state of consciousness is called the Hypnopombic or Hypnogogic state depending on which direction you are going. That is what a trained hypnotherapist uses to help you make the change.
Having said that everyone can experience hypnosis does not mean that any practitioner will have 100% success rate with everyone they see. Remember I said it was all about permission and rapport? If I don’t have it, even if the client is apparently willing then I will not succeed. I usually recommend someone else and the client gets what they want. (That works the other way too by the way.)
